He should have added: listen to professors in your same academic cohort; old-foggies really have little idea as to what's going on out there. Now in all fairness, Prof. Mankiw's advice is solid, if mind-numbingly obvious: publish in top journals or you won't get promoted; don't waste time in optional activities that are orthogonal to your research; get along with your colleagues (assistant professor rulz for dummies?), etc. The no blogs thing is interesting, but it does refer to a real perception out there especially among old hard liners. exactly what trying to tell you! People like you are more concerned about which company they fight for rather than the skill sets of a fighter? Lets Anderson Silva quits the UFC and goes to bellator? Does that man Anderson Silva is not irrelevant because fighting for Bellator? U know what i mean? ofcourse not! An organization make a fighter. A fighter makes a fighter. What u ppl are getting mixed up with is, u relate a fighters skill with the company..
